The Globe and Mail
The Globe and Mail gave me an amazing amount of freedom. They sent me all over North America from Quebec to Los Angeles. I covered treason trials and police conventions, rock festivals and medical congresses. I reported NATO manoeuvres on the Prairies, chased FLQ terrorist suspects round Montreal and mingled with the uber-rich of Palm Beach. The Globe also allowed me time to broadcast regularly for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, CBC.
I carried out two undercover investigations. The first was into a religious cult. The second exposed corrupt links between the Ontario Provincial Government and the building industry. That series of articles caused a considerable stir and the CBC asked me to co-write a television play about it.
The resulting drama – The Insurance Man from Ingersoll – won me an ACTRA award (Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists) for ‘Best Writer – Television’, but it didn’t tempt me away from novels.
In the end it all led to what I wanted – the publication of The Viking Process
